On the move

Thanks to her father's Army career, as a child Delia Richards lived in four different states and the ACT, moving every few years.

Since then, having completed a Bachelor of Education, the 32-year-old has taught at Australian and British high schools, was an activities co-ordinator for the Canadian division of an international property management group, had a ball on the slopes of Whistler and Thredbo as a ski instructor and was an Assistant Program Director with the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.

As a teacher at a Sydney private school, she now also chairs the school's OH&S Committee, works in a student welfare role and is a union representative.

“I don't have a benchmark to compare myself to, so this is a real boost," says Delia Richards, after securing the Goldman Sachs JB Were Postgraduate Scholarship in Business.

Undaunted by change, Delia enjoys the challenge of fitting into new environments. As she nears completion of her part-time Masters in Commerce, she hopes to use the qualification to make a further move from teaching into the corporate world.

"I'd like to work in learning and development, looking at organisational efficiencies, training, strategy, policy and culture," Delia says. "I'm interested in the way people interact within organisations and the way they do business with each other and with clients."

Delia says receiving one of the Goldman Sachs JB Were Postgraduate Scholarships in Business is a recognition of her achievements so far, “which is really important for me as I come from what many consider to be quite a ‘soft’ background of teaching", she says.

The scholarship contributes towards the cost of her course and will help demonstrate her leadership potential to future employers, she believes. As she’s completing the degree part-time, it has also given her confidence. “I don't have a benchmark to compare myself to, so this is a real boost."
