Young achiever

During an argument with his mother and father 10 years ago, Lloyd Tomlin, then eight, expressed his opinion in such a convincing manner that his parents told him he'd grow up to be a fine lawyer. Now in his second year of a Commerce/Law degree at UNSW, Lloyd still has a healthy appetite for a boisterous debate.

After a near-perfect TER of 99.9 in his HSC, Lloyd Tomlin jumped at the chance to accept a UNSW Scientia Scholarship.

"Unlike some law students, I'm very interested in practicing law," says the Scientia scholar. "I really enjoy mooting [performing mock trials] with the Law School, something I've been involved in for the last two years. It's difficult and can be stressful, but it's great experience."

Lloyd grew up in Port Stephens and was accelerated from third grade to fifth grade after teachers recognised his advanced learning capabilities. His parents, both of whom have degrees from UNSW, encouraged him to seek the finest education possible so when he scored a near-perfect TER of 99.9 in his HSC he jumped at the chance to accept a Scientia scholarship.

The Scientia program not only offers scholars an annual income of $10,000 but also provides guaranteed mentoring by senior academic staff, opportunities to participate in international student exchanges and allows more flexible course structuring, including direct entry into higher year courses.

Having already taken advantage of the mentoring offered by his scholarship, Lloyd says his several meetings with Angus Corbett, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law, have been extremely helpful.

The student exchange program is also an attractive option. "I'd love to spend some of my course overseas," he says.
