A group of Australian School of Business students involved in creating community programs has been chosen to represent Australia as delegates at an international literacy forum in New York City.

The UNSW branch of SIFE, or Students in Free Enterprise, will represent SIFE Australia at the 2007 HSBC Financial Literacy Forum, to be held in New York City in October.

SIFE UNSW won praise for their computer literacy project which helped financially disadvantaged young mothers.

Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a global non-profit organisation which is dedicated to creating programs that provide economic benefits for others.

SIFE UNSW’s winning ‘Glen Mervyn’ project was a computer and financial literacy-based course, designed to help financially disadvantaged young mothers who were clients of the Red Cross Glen Mervyn House in Randwick, NSW.

The course included modules to teach skills such as how to buy and sell on eBay, navigate Centrelink Online, and the basics of Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint. It was created and taught by SIFE students Simona Das, Mrinalini Khatri and Bernise Alviar.

The UNSW team was selected from 15 universities around Australia and will form part of an Australian contingent of five Australian SIFE representatives. The forum itself will involve over 100 participants from 27 different countries.

The selection was based on a community project funded by the HSBC Financial Literacy Grant, and was presented at the Financial Literacy Seminar recently held in Melbourne.
