Self Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) specialist course

In order to provide advice on Self-Managed Superannuation Funds you must hold RG 146 compliance in Superannuation (SMSFs) in the areas of General Knowledge, Specialist Knowledge and Skills. These components can be achieved in the following ways:

  • Generic Knowledge: Completion of the Chartered Accountants program or the CPA program satisfies the Generic Knowledge component
  • Specialist Knowledge: Completion of the SMSF Specialist course satisfies the Specialist Knowledge component
  • Skills: Completion of the optional SMSF Specialist Skills module satisfies the Skills component. (This optional module is available to members of CAANZ only. Registration is separate to the SMSF Specialisation course – see below for details. CPA members should contact CPA directly for information on Skills training.)

1. SMSF Specialisation Course:

The SMSF Specialist course is offered in two formats, as a three day intensive face-to-face workshop and in self-study format. The workshops are offered 1-2 times each year in Sydney and in Melbourne and the self-study option is offered twice a year. To pass the course students are required to complete an exam (see details below).

Three day intensive face-to-face workshop

The three day intensive face-to-face workshops will be offered in Sydney in 2017. The workshop requirea a minimum number of registered delegates to proceed. The three day intensive face-to-face workshop may be offered in other locations if sufficient demand exists.

The workshop is facilitated by leading subject matter experts. The fee includes:

  • course materials (provided at the workshop)
  • attendance at the three day intensive face-to-face workshop (including catering)
  • access to the SMSF student website
  • exam invigilation at a CBD venue in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane
  • exam marking

Numbers are restricted so please register early to secure your place. Your place will only be confirmed when payment is received. Workshops will run subject to the minimum required registrations being reached. When minimum registrations are not achieved and a workshop is cancelled, those registered will be offered a free transfer to an alternative workshop or a full refund.

Self study course

The course fee includes:

  • course materials (which are mailed to you shortly after registrations close)
  • access to the SMSF student website
  • exam invigilation at a CBD venue in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane
  • exam marking.

Completing the exam for the SMSF Specialisation course

To pass the course students are required to complete an exam. You will be asked to indicate your exam preference when you register for the course.

  1. Traditional Paper Exam: This exam option is a 3-hour supervised written paper exam. There is one exam date per course intake. Students can attend one of our CBD venues or organise their own supervision. Successful completion is awarded entirely on the exam responses. See here for more information about exam dates.   2. Portfolio + Interview – available to CA ANZ members only: This exam option requires you to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating SMSF expertise and to attend an interview (approximately 1 hour) to assess your knowledge of the course content with our assessors. The interviews are conducted via audio conference or webinar. Successful completion is awarded entirely on the interview responses. See full details.

2. SMSF Specialisation Skills module (optional module for CA members only)

The SMSF Specialisation Skills module is a self-study course available for CAANZ members who want to become RG146 compliant. The Skills module requires you to complete a 5-part assessment to demonstrate your competence in giving advice around superannuation (SMSF). You can register to do the Skills module at any time, however, it is recommended that you complete the SMSF Specialisation course before you register for the Skills Module. Your assessment will be due six weeks after you register.
