My MBA journey would not be possible without this generous scholarship. How will receiving your AGSM Scholarship make an impact in your MBA journey and in your career?

Without the scholarship an MBA would not have been a viable option for me right now and I’m so grateful to AGSM for their ongoing commitment to supporting female leaders.

You’ve recently begun your studies – can you tell me what it has been like so far?

The first four weeks of my MBA has been a whirlwind of learning and deep reflection, resulting in significant personal growth in a short time frame. I feel the whole cohort is well prepared with solid foundations in ethics, communication, leadership, and problem-solving. We’ve been physically and mentally challenged, we’ve laughed a lot, but most importantly we have formed close bonds and friendships that will be important throughout our MBA journey and beyond.

Why are you doing an MBA?

After completing a Bachelor of International Studies / Laws at UNSW, I have spent 6 years working as a lawyer in corporate law, specialising in mergers and acquisitions and have also held in-house and company secretarial roles at ASX listed companies. An MBA allows me to pursue my long-term vision to combine legal and commercial skills with my passion for social justice.

The AGSM MBA will provide the opportunity to pursue my career goals by being taught by world-class industry leaders and leveraging the networks of my cohort and the AGSM community.

Every day we are learning a lot about influence, leadership, cultural context and ethics, problem solving and self-management. Following the completion of a master’s in Media and Communications, I’ve worked in brand management, digital marketing and video journalism. My focus has always been balancing creativity with business needs - communicating a message with strategic focus. While this can be credited to greater experience, it’s also due to my greater understanding of digital storytelling, and the ability to highlight the human and emotional elements of communication.

I am seeking to gain a more holistic and strategic view of the business life cycle, and leadership generally. This broadened skillset and perspective will position me well, to progress and apply my creative skills strategically. Why are you doing an MBA?

I spent six years in hedge fund operations in San Francisco, CA, however after realising the hedge fund industry wasn’t the best fit for me, I took a year off to travel the world and think about my next career move. I wanted to pivot into real estate investing, something I had been doing on my own for a few years but wanted to go full-time. I have always been extremely passionate about education and felt it was the right time to go back to school.

Why did you choose the AGSM MBA?

I chose AGSM because it is one of the top business schools in the Asia-Pacific region and I had heard great things from alumni. The AGSM staff work very hard to ensure the classes are taught by leading industry professionals at the top of their field, and the cohort is extremely diverse.

The Women in Leadership Scholarship has been a huge benefit to me. This scholarship recognises my past success in a male-dominated field as well as offers me the financial means to study. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to refine my management skills and to excel in any industry, not just the world of American finance. I am grateful for the chance to share my story and to continue in my pursuit of success as a woman in leadership.

You’ve recently begun your studies – can you tell me what it has been like so far?

I’ve been consistently impressed with the calibre of lecturers and guest speakers. We were taught problem solving by a former head of McKinsey Australia using the same book McKinsey analysts use. We have professional acting coaches giving us tips on how to communicate more effectively and memorably in presentations. All our professors have extensive industry experience and are passionate about teaching us their subjects. The smaller class sizes have made it inviting to participate in class and the lecturers are keen to learn our names and to offer their time to us.

Do it!!! The program is enriching, stimulating and inspiring. Our school projects go beyond the classroom – the pedigree of the AGSM MBA program gives us access to industry executives which allows us the unique ability to shape society. I have served in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps for eight years. During this time I have had a variety of roles in Australia and overseas, including health planning, administration and logistics; as well as a posting as a Training Team Commander at the Royal Military College. I continue to serve in the Army part-time whilst studying.

Why are you doing an MBA?

The Foundation of Management course was an eye-opener in so many ways. The course instructors continually ask you to go out of your comfort zone, to be aware of your shortcomings and to actively work on them and turn them into strengths. One that really struck me was the power of coaching and I learnt the value in active listening and to ask open-ended questions, to be advice-free and to let the coachee get to the root of their problems themselves and solve them.

Can you tell us about your career so far? What has been your focus?

I’m an electronics engineer by qualification and started off in Bangalore, India as a product developer at Bosch. I got a chance to work on cutting-edge products in the automotive field. My technical background and exposure to a variety of complex problems helped me develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. I then moved on to take a technical leadership role in Germany that provided me with the opportunity to strengthen my organisation and communication skills.

Why are you doing an MBA?

As a technical project manager, one of my key roles was to prepare and present the product strategy to higher management. I realised that to have a well-rounded proposal I needed to show the business value in it. I felt that I lacked a deeper understanding of different functional areas of business such as finance, accounting, and marketing. My MBA will help me gain this broad knowledge in these critical areas. I see my MBA at AGSM as a bridge to possibly changing my role, industry, and location.

What are your hopes for career development during the MBA?

I am already on the path of personal development where I am able to work upon my presentation and public speaking skills. I hope to keep developing these skills. Networking is an area where I need to work upon and I am glad to see the career development team provide ample opportunities for the same.

You’ve recently begun your studies – can you tell me what it has been like so far?

Looking backward, I wouldn't believe that I could learn so much in a month. I have been able to work on a wide multitude of skills and the faculty have worked with the whole cohort to develop what I would call "life skills". Even in a short span of time, we learnt in depth about Mckinsey's way of problem-solving, presentation and speech delivery and I got an opportunity to learn by doing during the two-day residential camp. The most surprising thing for me has been the course in ethics in management which is relevant today and provided me with the adequate tools to handle ethical dilemmas that I may have to face as a leader.

What advice do you have for others considering an AGSM MBA?

I have witnessed tremendous personal growth in a short span of time, and I am confident that my time ahead will help me grow continually. I would strongly recommend the AGSM MBA to anyone who is looking to become a global leader. If you are looking at a scholarship, I would suggest having an open discussion with the admissions team and try to understand the scholarship opportunities available to you.

Can you tell us about your career so far? What has been your focus?

My Career to date has been primarily focused towards automotive and Internal combustion engines. I've been fortunate to work for arguably the best supercar manufacture, McLaren, and now I'm looking to find a challenge in a new sector.

Why did you choose the AGSM MBA?

I chose to do my MBA to help me pursue a new career trajectory whilst given credibility to the skills and experience I've already gained. I'm hoping the exposure to different sectors and the opportunity to learn new skills will help my search for a new career path. AGSM also boasts an intimate and diverse cohort that contrasts with many other MBA programs and will allow me to gain a more targeted and personalised MBA qualification coupled with the opportunity to take an International exchange program in term four.

How will receiving your AGSM Scholarship make an impact in your MBA journey and in your career?

The financial freedom that the Scholarship offers will allow me to focus on my studies and the MBA experience. One of the biggest concerns with other institutes was the lack of clarity over the scholarship system. I feel that I will be able to get more from this course and my cohort without the added stress of finding the funds to keep going.

You’ve recently begun your studies – can you tell me what it has been like so far?

What's surprised me the most is the balance of personal and professional skill development. I've found that my professional skills have come quite naturally but the availability to develop personal skills is a major plus. As a Brit, it can be quite easy to fall into a task focused mentality but the soft skills element is one I hope will really help to set me apart from other Leaders as my career progresses.

What advice do you have for others considering an AGSM MBA?

Give yourself plenty of time for your application. My biggest difficulty was the time difference and getting answers to some of my questions. The recruitment team are amazing and if they have time to investigate things for you then that will make both yours and their lives much easier. The GMAT isn't the most enjoyable exercise so get into that as soon as you can even just to benchmark yourself against other candidates, you can always retake the test if needed.
