Summary of Course

This course introduces students to contemporary global business strategy concepts, theories and principles that a firm can use in making decisions affecting its long-term performance in an increasingly global business environment.  In presenting these principles, students will be exposed to both leading scholarly thoughts and the current practice of global business strategy.

Course Aims and Relationship to Other Courses

​The course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge about the field of international business strategy and equip students with professional skills to use the knowledge in practices.

This course introduces a set of contemporary strategy concepts and theories to help students identify important and consistent principles that a firm can use in making decisions that will affect its long term performance in an increasingly globalised business environment. The course brings together the leading scholarly thoughts (i.e. theoretical principles) on international business strategy. The course pays attention to the strategic issues facing multinational enterprises and entrepreneurial ventures considering going global, including how to enter foreign markets, how to manage international alliances and how to structure an organization in ways that fit the global strategy. While these principles constitute the basis for systematic examination of international business strategy and management, they do not necessarily explain why a particular firm succeeded or failed. The successful application of the concepts and theories introduced in this course depends on your ability to use them in a particular situation that a firm faces. Students should therefore not only try to understand the theories, concepts and frameworks discussed in the lectures, but also make efforts to apply them in tutorial discussions, presentations and assignments.

3. Learning and Teaching Activities

Approach to Learning and Teaching in the Course

To introduce the most salient principles, this course is based on the leading scholarly thoughts and current practice of global business strategy. The theoretical principles provide the basis of various conceptual frameworks and models, which in turn help us to make sense of a variety of strategic issues firms face in a complex and uncertain global business environment.

You will learn about these concepts through lectures and readings, and you will have an opportunity to develop your own understanding of the concepts by applying them in case discussions. Further, weekly case discussions, individual case study report and simulation activities also provide opportunities for students to reflect and build on their prior experiences and knowledge, challenge their current beliefs and develop new practices and understanding.

Learning Activities and Teaching Strategies

The 3.5 hours of online classes each week are divided into Lectures (two-hours) and tutorials (one and a half hours). Lectures will be delivered in an online asynchronous mode and tutorials in synchronous mode.

In each of the teaching weeks, you will need to:

1. Watch the lecture video which introduces the core concepts on the week's topic.

2. Attend tutorials and complete weekly learning activities. For example, you will contribute to case discussions in tutorials, and work with your group members to complete simulation decisions.

The lectures focus on the ‘knowing’ aspects of the course, in which each week we focus on introducing and applying concepts, theories and models to extend our knowledge of international business strategy.  The weekly tutorials focus on the ‘doing’ of strategic management simulation, as well as more time to discuss weekly cases in a smaller group.

The foundational material for each lecture will be released on each Wednesday (consistent with the course timetable), as a series of voice annotated PowerPoint presentations. You are expected to watch these presentations each week before you contribute to the weekly case discussion and tutorial activities.

The group-based simulation will provide you with the opportunity to utilize the course learned concepts and practise teamwork and leadership skills. You will be required to make strategic decisions in the online simulation system in each week from week 2 to week 9. You will need to communicate with your group members via online communication platforms to make your group's collective decisions in each week.

Group presentation will provide you with the opportunity to practice your presentation and critical thinking skills. You will work with your assigned group members and deliver your presentation as a voice annotated PowerPoint presentation.  You will be able to interact with the audience in your class during the Q&A session.

Weekly case discussions will help you to understand the key topics and concepts of the lecture and provide you with the opportunity to practice problem-solving skills by utilizing the learned concepts.

The individual case study report will examine your understanding of the course learned concepts and critical analysis capability. You will need to address the case questions by utilizing multiple theories or frameworks and apply them to the case context.

The written assignments will be submitted via moodle assignment folders.

Note: Please note that lectures of this course are shared with another course, but that tutorials are designed specifically to your degree/ level.

As a result of this feedback, this year we provide further opportunities for students to engage in the weekly case studies and make the link between theory and case context as well as enhancing critical thinking and decision making skills.

Delivering the course online and ensuring your learning experience, actively participate in each week's learning activities become one of the most important factors of successful outcomes. As a result, the weight of engagement and participation is increased and measured by multiple assessments: weekly case discussions, simulation practices, simulation quizzes and group presentation.

Program Learning Outcomes

Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Academic Integrity is honest and responsible scholarship. This form of ethical scholarship is highly valued at UNSW. Terms like Academic Integrity, misconduct, referencing, conventions, plagiarism, academic practices, citations and evidence based learning are all considered basic concepts that successful university students understand. Learning how to communicate original ideas, refer sources, work independently, and report results accurately and honestly are skills that you will be able to carry beyond your studies.

The definition of academic misconduct is broad. It covers practices such as cheating, copying and using another person’s work without appropriate acknowledgement. Incidents of academic misconduct may have serious consequences for students.


UNSW regards plagiarism as a form of academic misconduct. UNSW has very strict rules regarding plagiarism. Plagiarism at UNSW is using the words or ideas of others and passing them off as your own. All Schools in the Business School have a Student Ethics Officer who will investigate incidents of plagiarism and may result in a student’s name being placed on the Plagiarism and Student Misconduct Registers.

Below are examples of plagiarism including self-plagiarism:

Copying: Using the same or very similar words to the original text or idea without acknowledging the source or using quotation marks. This includes copying materials, ideas or concepts from a book, article, report or other written document, presentation, composition, artwork, design, drawing, circuitry, computer program or software, website, internet, other electronic resource, or another person's assignment, without appropriate acknowledgement of authorship.

Inappropriate Paraphrasing: Changing a few words and phrases while mostly retaining the original structure and/or progression of ideas of the original, and information without acknowledgement. This also applies in presentations where someone paraphrases another’s ideas or words without credit and to piecing together quotes and paraphrases into a new whole, without appropriate referencing.

Collusion: Presenting work as independent work when it has been produced in whole or part in collusion with other people. Collusion includes:

  • Students providing their work to another student before the due date, or for the purpose of them plagiarising at any time
  • Paying another person to perform an academic task and passing it off as your own
  • Stealing or acquiring another person’s academic work and copying it
  • Offering to complete another person’s work or seeking payment for completing academic work

Collusion should not be confused with academic collaboration (i.e., shared contribution towards a group task).

Inappropriate Citation: Citing sources which have not been read, without acknowledging the 'secondary' source from which knowledge of them has been obtained.

Self-Plagiarism: ‘Self-plagiarism’ occurs where an author republishes their own previously written work and presents it as new findings without referencing the earlier work, either in its entirety or partially. Self-plagiarism is also referred to as 'recycling', 'duplication', or 'multiple submissions of research findings' without disclosure. In the student context, self-plagiarism includes re-using parts of, or all of, a body of work that has already been submitted for assessment without proper citation.

Student Responsibilities and Conduct

​Students are expected to be familiar with and adhere to university policies in relation to class attendance and general conduct and behaviour, including maintaining a safe, respectful environment; and to understand their obligations in relation to workload, assessment and keeping informed.

It is expected that you will spend at least ten to twelve hours per week studying for a course except for Summer Term courses which have a minimum weekly workload of twenty to twenty four hours. This time should be made up of reading, research, working on exercises and problems, online activities and attending classes. In periods where you need to complete assignments or prepare for examinations, the workload may be greater. Over-commitment has been a cause of failure for many students. You should take the required workload into account when planning how to balance study with employment and other activities.
