The AGSM Graduate Certificate in Technology Management is a complete stand-alone qualification and can be undertaken as a pathway to an AGSM Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. It has been designed to align organisational and technology management fundamentals for individuals who wish to understand, analyse and adapt to today’s challenging and hyper-competitive market.

This program teaches the understandings of how to use data to create competitive advantages with innovative management, strategy and technology, to succeed in an increasingly complex market. The program introduces managers to several techniques that are relevant for managerial decision-making, such as data preparation, data analysis, data visualisation and data storytelling, and equips graduates with the ability to establish business processes and technologies as differentiators for success.

Supporting leaders who intend to apply their entrepreneurial spirit to innovating within established organisations, as well as managers whose goal it is to build and manage innovation and technology processes in the organisation. For those with entrepreneurial aspirations, start-up creation and corporate innovation concepts are structured throughout the program with courses that uniquely link students with innovators and successful start-up CEOs.

The AGSM The Graduate Certificates are a part-time program and can be completed anywhere between 8 months to 2 years. Should you choose to continue your studies the certificate can articulate into an MBA degree*.

*Entry into AGSM MBA programs is subject to meeting the AGSM Admissions Criteria.

Mandatory Core course

MBAX9154 Managing with Digital Technology

Managing Digital Technology increases technical literacy of managers and leaders. The main objective of this course is to give managers a high-level overview of the fundamental concepts, main topics and problems in computer science and information technology and how they relate to business settings, and thus equip them to make better decisions regarding applications of technology, even if they are not technologists themselves. This course takes a top-down approach and emphasises high level mastery of important concepts in computer science and information technology. Students who successfully complete this course will feel confident in any technology organisation and will have an appreciation for the problems in the field, how they affect or constrain business decisions and how it all works.

MBAX9101 Project Management

Project management involves the overall planning, control and coordination of a project. It is the process by which the responsibility for all phases is combined within one multidisciplinary function. This course introduces you to the project management skills needed during the lifetime of a project. It explores some key concepts of project management, including project risk management.

MBAX9132 Intrapreneurship

For many established businesses, the ability to identify and effectively respond to new opportunities is increasingly central to their success and, indeed, survival. Evidence suggests that innovation in a corporate context can often be difficult. In recent years, however, a growing number of organisations have drawn on approaches and practices more common to small entrepreneurial start-ups to help them identify new market opportunities and how they could respond to these opportunities. This is sometimes called ‘intrapreneurship’.

The aim of this course is to provide students with insights into the intrapreneurship process and to help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to enhance the ability of their organisations to identify new opportunities in the market and respond to them effectively. It does so by giving them hands-on experience of participating in an online corporate challenge.

One of the key aspects to successful intrapreneurship is the ability to work collaboratively across different aspects of the business, often in different locations and parts of the world. For this reason, the corporate challenge is based on group work, where students will work through an online platform to identify and develop a new business opportunity for a corporate partner.

MBAX9135 Business Analytics

This is a core course in Business Analytics, which enables organizations to make quicker, better, and more intelligent decisions to create business value in the broadest sense. This course addresses the context of business analytics and the management actions required for organizations to manage business analytics such that they can create value from their data and make progress on the transformational journey to becoming data-driven. Emphasis will be placed on the managing and sourcing data, the analytic process and the role of leadership in supporting the organizational and cultural change associated with the transformation to becoming a data-driven organization.

As part of the business analytics process you will build predictive models. This requires a basic understanding of statistics and you will therefore be required to study the material on basic statistics provided by Harvard online training. IBM’s Watson Analytics will be used to build predictive models and communicate analytic insights.

MBAX9150 Digital Innovation

In this course, students will first learn the fundamentals of innovation and technology, including the impact of technology on organisational strategy, internal and external factors influence a firm’s technology strategy, diffusion of technology and technology disruption. Students are next introduced to the stages of the entrepreneurial life cycle, categories of entrepreneurial opportunities and processes for generating new business ideas. After translating opportunities into a well-crafted plan and pitch, students will learn various financial strategies to support new business and how to design experiments using minimum viable products to test market-driven hypotheses and refine multiple aspects of the business model. Next, students will explore essential factors influencing customers to adopt new products in the current business environment and approaches to scaling businesses built on new products and services. Finally, the course concludes by analysing how startups can embed globalisation into the foundations of their ventures and looking at strategies of established firms in creating breakthrough innovations.

MBAX9152 Digital Strategy

The course is divided into two key themes. Weeks 1-5 focus primarily on the strategic role and organisational value of digital technologies. Weeks 6-10 focus on the strategic management of digital technologies to realise this value potential. Every week there will be a mix of readings and/or case studies that form the foundation of discussions and activities. Some written preparation in the form of a blog post is required every week to ensure students have done the pre-work necessary to engage in these class discussions, which are facilitated face-to-face or via the course forum.

The AGSM Graduate Certificate Programs are highly competitive for entry. You will need to show excellence in your application as well as meeting the following entry requirements. 

There are two pathways into the AGSM Graduate Certificate Programs:

  • A strong undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) and a minimum of 2 years professional or managerial work experience
  • Or at least 6 years professional work experience if you don’t have an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.

If you are applying based on work experience, please ensure your referee reports clearly cover at least 5 out of the last 6 years (sometimes multiple referee reports are necessary to cover 5 years).

Online classes

AGSM Graduate Certificate students can set the pace and style of their learning and choose to take courses that can be delivered either online or through weekly evening or weekend intensive classes. 

Whether you are completing a class in person or in a virtual environment through the intuitive, communication tool: Moodle, the emphasis will be on sharing knowledge and skills. Online classes do not require facilitators and participants to be online at the same time - it is asynchronous, enabling you to contribute to discussions at a time that best suites you. 

AGSM @ UNSW Business School becomes your 'mobile campus'; take your course materials with you on business trips and continue to participate online. Class facilitators manage the discussion and assess your participation throughout the course.

Class size

For each course, you will attend each course with a cohort of other co-participants and a class facilitator. Group discussions, either online or face-to-face, ensures a sharing of knowledge with fellow students with diverse backgrounds and experience levels, and enable you to connect with the program facilitators. Your class facilitator will lead and guide interaction and participation in the online classroom environment.

Face-to-face classes

Graduate Certificate courses will be available in face-to-face mode at a UNSW campus, with course selection alternating each session. Both class delivery options are based on the same course material content, and students who undertake face-to-face classes will access our online tool Moodle to download their course materials.

Course materials

The course materials are the starting point of your weekly studies. Graduate Certificate course materials are divided into 12 topics, one per each teaching week, and include the core concepts, activities for reflection, set readings, reference lists of further readings and detailed information regarding assessment.

It is expected that all participants will have read the week's unit prior to attending class or participating in online class discussion. Course materials are available in three different formats:

  • A PDF via Moodle 4 weeks prior to the commencement of class (typically in the week enrolments close)
  • Approximately one week before classes commence, course materials are available in separate units and you should expect to receive an email from your facilitator in this period
