Alumni welcome new international students to the community

In March 2013, UNSW launched an exciting new program for alumni to 'give back' and stay connected to the university community. The pilot Alumni Host program has seen a group of alumni, including five ASB alumni, partner with first year international students to welcome them to UNSW and to the wider Australian community.

Alumnus Jerry Stesel (BCom '06), Julian Reynolds (BCom '66 and ASB Alumni Leader), Stephanie Pow (BCom '09), Alex Park (BCom '08) and Winston Lo (BCom '94) each hosted two first year international students for an informal gathering over breakfast, lunch, dinner, picnic or BBQ. Alumni shared with the new students stories of their own student days as well as anecdotes and insights into their professional and personal achievements. Students greatly value the warm welcome and the opportunity to draw inspiration from their alumni hosts.

Alex Park and Stephanie Pow joined forces to co-host a dinner with six new international students.

"I remember my first semester on campus - it was overwhelming! By participating in the Alumni Host Program, I hope to provide a friendly face for incoming international students - someone they feel comfortable asking the questions that they didn't want to ask of university staff," Stephanie says.

Following the successful pilot program, we are now calling for expressions of interest from Alumni to participate in the Semester 2 program.
