Banking conference puts spotlight on risk

Tuesday, 10 December 2013  Features

Globally renowned banking and finance authorities, including the RBA's Guy Debelle and Professor Robert Engle, plus many other Australian and international monetary experts and senior government executives will meet in Sydney in December for the 26th Australasian Finance and Banking Conference.

This high-level conference, which is organised by the Australian School of Business, will discuss the main challenges affecting the banking and finance industries in the Asia Pacific region. Up to 300 people from 30 countries are expected to participate in the conference.

"The conference will examine the latest developments on risk around the world relating to the banking system, among many other subjects, and will evaluate the cost of government credit support," said Professor Moshirian, the conference convener. "It will put the spotlight on Sydney as a major financial centre in the region and explore the way Australia, as a regional hub, could assist the Asia Pacific to develop a more sophisticated regional financial system."

Professor Moshirian from the Australian School of Business, said in past years the conference had been successful in bringing together the world's foremost thought leaders from the financial community. "The Australasian Finance and Banking Conference is the most prestigious finance conference in the Asia-Pacific region."

A forum on the first day is a vital part of the conference. The Global Systemic Risk, Liquidity and Global Financial Stability Forum will focus on and discuss the challenges and risks facing the financial markets around the world.

Professor Moshirian said the milestone event features a debate about finance issues that have dominated markets in 2013, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the forthcoming G20 meeting, and the ongoing currency disputes with China.

"Events of the past year such as promotion of free trade within APEC countries, the currency wars centred on China and the Yuan, and the recent slump in the value of the Australian dollar, have all helped shape finance movements in the Asia-Pacific region and hence our discussions at the conference," Professor Moshirian said.
