Community Forum: 1000 Indigenous Accountants

Tuesday, 22 May 2012  Features

According to recent research, out of more than 150,000 accountants in Australia, less than 20 have self identified as Indigenous. The Australian School of Business (ASB) is addressing this issue by hosting a community forum as part a new national initiative.

In partnership with Nura Gili, the ASB forum will give participants, including Indigenous TAFE and high school students, the opportunity to find out about the different pathways to becoming an accountant and the career opportunities available to them.

Gavin Tye, Indigenous Strategies Relationship Manager says: "Formal education in finance and accounting will have ongoing benefits for Indigenous people and their communities."

The initiative aims to attract over 1000 Indigenous people to the accounting profession over the next decade.

'1000 Indigenous Accountants' in a decade is a joint initiative funded by three professional accounting bodies including CPA Australia, The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants.

During the forum participants will take part in practical workshops as well as panel discussions with Indigenous mentors and leading experts in the field.

Speakers on the day include:

Gavin Tye, Indigenous Strategies Relationship Manager
Anthony Ashby, Ashby & Co. Chartered Accountants & ASB Alumnus
Ron Timbery, Finance and Compliance Officer La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council & ASB Alumnus
Sharon Gray, National Business Development Manager - Indigenous Jobs Australia
Adrian Williams, Head of Property Finance, AMP Capital
Peter Roebuck, Head of Accounting at ASB, UNSW

The 1000 Indigenous Accountants Community Forum will be held on Thursday 24 May at the University of New South Wales.
