Lynne B. Sagalyn, Professor of Real Estate and Director, Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, Columbia Business School visited the Australian School of Business this month as the Andrew Roberts Visiting Professor. During her trip, Lynne met with ASB academics and addressed students and alumni at an event featuring a panel of real estate experts.

Lead by moderator Robert Harley, Property Editor at the Australian Financial Review, Lynne joined a panel of industry experts including Tim Church, Managing Director, Head of Real Estate Australasia, UBS Investment Bank; David Harrison, Joint Managing Director, Charter Hall and Campbell Hanan, Group Executive, Head of Investa Office.

Lynne discussed some of the transformations seen in the commercial real estate sector over the last 35 years, including the changes in capital flowing to real estate and the format used to attract investment into the sector.

She explained to alumni how the shift from family-owned real estate to institutional investment management has seen the development of a sophisticated industry which now has access to wide variety of capital including that from sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and equities.

The panel also discussed Australia as an attractive real estate market for international investment, thanks in part to our superior superannuation system.

The event was also an opportunity to share the news with alumni that the School will, from 2014, be offering students the opportunity to complete a degree at ASB majoring in real estate studies.

A highlights video on the panel event will be available online soon.
