Meet the Entrepreneur: the state of Australia's venture capital industry

Friday, 28 October 2011  Features

Australia's venture capital industry will be the topic of debate at the upcoming Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship's meet the entrepreneur speaker series.

The event will bring together venture capitalists, innovators and entrepreneurs in a moderated panel discussion of the myths and realities surrounding the venture capital industry in Australia.

Dr Martin Bliemel, Director of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), said that the venture capital industry in Australia is at an interesting stage. "Accel Partners in the US has put as much venture capital into Australian start-ups as the entire venture capital industry together over the last year. This shows that there's potential here, so much so that foreign venture companies are investing in Australia. But perhaps the local funding industry is not quite where it could be. This topic is especially relevant when there's talk of "locking down" superannuation funds even more in an attempt to protect individuals' investment, when even 1% of that money would increase the size of the local VC pool by at least 20 times."

The Meet the Entrepreneur series, co-sponsored and hosted by Ernst & Young, gives aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to hear first hand advice from leaders in their fields.

Panellists include:
Melissa Widner - General Partner at SeaPoint Ventures
Gary Zamel - Managing Director of Latitude Investments Pty Ltd
Adrian Bunter - Director at Posse, Director at Hall Capital Strategies
Pty Ltd
Benjamin Ranck - CEO, All Over Geo (Fishburner)
Peter Gray - Senior Manager, Australian Technology Showcase
