About Genevieve

Genevieve Hawkins (MBA Exec ’07, GradCertChangeMgmt ’03) is a Senior Executive at powerhouse company, Wesfarmers. She is also President of the Melbourne UNSW Business School Alumni Committee.

I made my career choice because... I value working with great leaders who are both commercial thinkers and values-based in their approach to making business deliver results sustainably. Prior to my current role at Wesfarmers I spent 10 years in management consulting running a company before selling it to a Global company and becoming one of their senior managers. I had never defined myself as a consultant but rather a manager, so I wanted to make a move into a large company before I was boxed into being only a consultant. The opportunity came up to run a self-insurance portfolio for Wesfarmers which has been a fantastic opportunity to get my teeth stuck into a complex portfolio in a pseudo consulting role.

If I had known then what I know now, I would have... stopped to breathe a bit more and focus on behaving intentionally rather than instinctively.

As a student I... dreaded doing action learning reviews and yet they helped embed a skill of disciplined self-reflection that I still continue to use now.

My most impressive achievement is... bringing up two amazing children while juggling completing an Exec MBA, selling a business and taking on a senior management role.

At the moment I'm inspired by... my family of 8 siblings. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of this wonderful family who are so supportive.

Others say I... should never drink coffee as I have too much energy as it is.

You might be surprised to know that I... still find time every day to enjoy reading a light novel to help me unwind.

My greatest goal that I'm yet to achieve... to be able to breeze through my daughters’ teenage years and end up with well-adjusted, happy and capable adult children while still expanding my management career.
