When not running her boutique financial services firm Multiforte, Kate McCallum (MCom Class of 1994), volunteers on the UNSW Australia Business School Alumni Advisory Board and was chief organiser of the 2011 Annual Alumni Cocktail Event.
I made my career choice because ... I chose a career in financial services because I wanted to work in a dynamic and interesting sector, that would give me a lot of different role choices and keep me challenged. I don’t think I quite knew what I was in for – though I certainly got what I wished for in terms of challenges.
At the time, I had no financial services experience, and held an undergraduate degree in Arts and had just completed my Master of Commerce at UNSW. The upside was that I’d been working as a management consultant, so had a strong skill base in strategy, analysis and communication. This enabled me to secure a marketing role with US-based financial services firm, State Street, which was a great entree into financial services.
From there, I chose roles (some chose me) that enabled me to increase my technical knowledge and my skills and experience in strategy and business management, sales and people management, which have proved to be essential skills now in establishing and operating my own financial advice business.
