Social Enterprise: Doing Business for Social Good (COMM5201)
The Big Idea is Australia’s leading social enterprise immersion and competition for university students. It is coordinated by The Big Issue, Australia’s longest standing and most significant social enterprise. The Big Issue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that delivers solutions to help homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people to positively change their lives.
Leveraging the Big Issue’s expertise and networks, the Big Idea competition will immerse UNSW students in the world of social enterprise. The competition requires students to develop their own idea for a social enterprise, which will be pitched to a Big Issue panel of expert judges at the end of the semester.
Throughout the semester, students will gain unprecedented access to social entrepreneurs, Australian ‘Thought Leaders’ and experts across various sectors. This guidance, advice and direction will ensure students are well placed to understand social issues and develop their ideas into viable business plans.
UNSW’s panel of judges will select one postgraduate and one undergraduate team to progress to the competition semi-finals held in Melbourne where they will present their social enterprise plan to a panel of judges. The competition culminates with finalist judging and an awards event.
Student prizes include a professional immersion day for the winning team at The Big Issue’s Head Office and PwC Australia’s office in Melbourne, including flights and accommodation.
Students have the opportunity to enter the Big Idea competition either as an extra-curricular activity or for-credit by doing it as part of a for-credit course, COMM3030 for undergraduate students and COMM5201 for postgraduate students. A social enterprise, broadly defined, is a ‘for profit’ organisation that has a social or environmental mission at the core of what it does.
Students are set with a challenge to explore an area of disadvantage and propose a business case for an appropriate social enterprise. The idea can be designed to work as a start-up or in conjunction with an existing not-for-profit organisation.
In addition to developing foundational knowledge about entrepreneurship generally and social enterprises in particular, the course will also focus on development of team work and presentation skills including how to pitch to potential investors an idea for ‘doing business for social good’.
COMM3030 Big Idea is a Gen Ed course available to UNSW Sydney undergraduate students who have met the following eligibility:

As enrolment is restricted you cannot enrol yourself into this course. The Centre for Social Impact will enrol eligible students who have been notified of their acceptance into this course.

A social enterprise, broadly defined, is a ‘for profit’ organisation that has a social or environmental mission at the core of what it does. Whilst social enterprises might have different legal structures and reinvest or redistribute profits in different ways, they are all characterised by an integrated business model that enables their (social and/or environmental) mission to be realised through their direct business operations and not by business profits alone.
The aim of this course is to first introduce the key features of a social enterprise, examining the various, and at times contested, terminology used in social enterprise/social business contexts, and compare and contrast social enterprises to other enterprise forms (corporations, businesses, and charitable/benevolent organisations). The course will then consider some of the challenges, constraints, and opportunities that social enterprises confront in pursuing their organisational mission (both social/environmental and financial) before examining how a social enterprise might be designed, launched, and scaled.
In order to put theory into practice, the assessment for this course will be structured around the development of a social enterprise idea and business case to be entered into the UNSW Big Idea competition.

COMM5201 is a core course in the Master of Commerce Global Sustainability and Social Enterprise specialisation. It is also available to students in other MCom specialisations as their additional general elective.
